MUSEUM OF EVOLUTION

Museum of Evolution

The Museum of Evolution was founded in 1937 through the initiative of Professor Mirali Akhundov. It was the first and only museum of its kind in the Caucasus and one of the rarest in the former Soviet Union. The museum illustrates the dynamics of evolutionary theory, providing students with 2,461 exhibits as visual materials for studying evolution.

The museum’s exhibitions depict how the diversity of life forms results from adaptation to different environmental conditions. The collected exhibits from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras are displayed in chronological order, demonstrating their historical development.

Additionally, the museum showcases expositions that comprehensively explain the theoretical foundations of breeding new, high-yielding plant varieties and livestock breeds. These exhibits highlight artificial selection as the driving force behind agricultural advancements.

A special section of the museum is dedicated to Azerbaijan’s fauna, featuring around 70 bird species, including partridges, eagles, peacocks, pheasants, ducks, and more, preserved as taxidermy specimens.

The museum's collections play a vital role in the teaching process at the Faculty of Biology, contributing to the training of highly qualified biologists.
