The "Baku University" newspaper, the official publication of Baku State University (BSU), was founded in 1929. It initially started under the name “Student – Journalist” and has been published regularly since 1947. Until 1990, the newspaper was printed in Azerbaijani and Russian under the title "For Lenin’s Upbringing". Since 1991, it has been published under its current name, "Baku University", making it the first university newspaper in Azerbaijan and one of the country’s first sector-specific newspapers.
Throughout its history, the newspaper has been edited by prominent publicists, including Rasul Rustamov, Israfil Jahangirov, Yusif Yusifov, Seyfulla Aliyev, Nusrat Baghirov, Aslan Aslanov, Vali Mammadov, Eldar Aliyev, Agamusa Zeynalov, and others.
Since its inception, "Baku University" has been committed to BSU’s academic traditions, extensively covering the university’s scientific and educational activities, student life, education system developments, and faculty recruitment policies. Even during the strict censorship period of the Soviet era, the newspaper remained dedicated to national and public interests, focusing on fostering a strong national identity among students.
Today, "Baku University" remains a widely read publication among BSU faculty and students, serving as an important platform for the academic community. It is published once a month, covering a variety of topics.
Since 2019, the newspaper has been printed in full color with a new design, playing a key role in BSU’s public relations and information dissemination. It actively reports on university affairs, including education, science, and public life at BSU, international collaborations and ongoing projects, reaching methods, textbooks, and educational resources, research activities, laboratories, and scientific centers and university’s social life and student engagement.
Professors, faculty members, and distinguished scholars regularly contribute opinion pieces and academic discussions. The newspaper covers university infrastructure improvements, such as faculty renovations, dormitory upgrades, and research facility expansions.
Since 2020, Journalism faculty students have been actively involved in the newspaper’s publication. They participate in content creation and editorial processes, layout design and printing and publishing and editorial workflows.
This initiative provides students with practical experience in journalism and media production, further enriching their academic and professional development.
