Guba Training-Experience and Recreation Center is located in one of the most charming corners of Azerbaijan – Ikinji Nugadi village of Guba District. The Centre is located at a distance of 168 km from Baku and its total area is 8 hectares. This Center is also used for recreation by professors and teachers during the summer months.
The foundation of the Training-Experience and Recreation Centre was laid by the allocation of a land plot from the sovkhoz – state farm territory – named after Zhdanov (now Ikinji Nugadi village) of the Guba District according to Order No. 388 of the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan (then the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR) Anvar Alikhanov dated July 10, 1967. According to that Order, it was entrusted to the Executive Committee of the Guba District to allocate 8 hectares of land from the territory of the state farm named after Zhdanov for the creation of a training-practice base for the Faculty of Biology of the Azerbaijan State University named after S.M. Kirov. But this area was far from the concept of the imagined ‘base’. It was far from populated areas and surrounded by dense, messy forests, apple orchards, and bushes. Only the blessings of nature allowed (made it possible) to organize practical training in these untouched places. The university administration had spent almost two years opening the way to the base, creating conditions for at least to set up tents in the area. Finally, in the summer of 1970, a group of students from the Faculty of Biology came along a newly laid trail and conducted their first practice/ experience in tents set up under apple trees. Such ‘tent practice’ continued until 1991.
As a result of the Armenian aggression, 38 families who fled from Gubadli District in 1993 were placed in the base for temporary residence. This process continued until 2012, and during these 20 years, students’ practice has not been conducted. To solve the problems caused by the landslide started in Gulazi village of Guba District in 2007, and to move that village to a new area, the state allocated 60 hectares of land in the territory of Ashagi Atuj village of the district, and 189 houses, with a yard area of 800m2 (8 sot) each, were built there. Part of the residents of that new settlement, which was operational on March 6, 2012, were refugees who settled in the training-practice base of BSU and who had requested to improve their living conditions, and this development paved the way for the construction of a new Training-Experience Centre. After a while, the Scientific Council of BSU adopted a decision to change the name of the Teaching- Experience Base of the Biology Faculty to the Educational Practice and Recreation Centre of Baku State University.
It was much more profitable to build a new building for the students of the 21st century rather than to repair a building that had long been ruined by “temporary” users and was destroyed almost to the ground. Given the decision of the Scientific Council of BSU to use it as a temporary shelter for construction workers and a warehouse, the foundation of a new five-story building was laid nearby – in the beautiful foothills. It was larger than the area of the ten-story New Academic Building of BSU put into operation in 2008. Taking into account that there should be not only the same type of teaching auditoriums but also a complex set equipped with rooms and facilities, including 150 rooms with individual sanitary facilities, shower cabins and bedding, a dining complex for 200 persons, a large assembly hall for 300 people, sports and exercise facilities, a library, it is was hard to imagine the scale of construction and its completion.
On April 28, 2013, the staff of BSU held its first subbotnik – clean-up event in Nughadi. After that, clean-up events became intense. Dozens of people volunteered on Saturday and Sunday to complete the construction. Moreover, since August, this intensity had slightly increased, and the employees of individual faculties made their great contributions to the improvement and bringing the territory in order on the eve of the opening ceremony. The trees and flowers planted, the roads built in a short time, and the eye-catching greenery brought a new look to this charming corner of nature. The construction works were completed in mid-September. Moreover, when in 1919, the university was opened, and the words of the first rector V. В. Razumovskiy “At the crossroads of East and West the torch was lit – this is the Baku State University" made people happy, after 45 years, finally, the opening of the Training-Experience and Recreation Centre in Guba made them happy as well.
September 18, 2013, went down in the history of BSU as a glorious event. Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Mehriban Aliyeva, the President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation participated in the opening ceremony of the Training-Experience and Recreation Centre of Baku State University. The head of the country, who was closely interested in the progress of the construction and the structure of the building, got acquainted with the teaching and recreation rooms, assembly and conference halls, canteen, and sports complexes.
At the entrance of the building, there is a bust of National leader Heydar Aliyev, and the great leader’s valuable ideas about the independence of our country are engraved on the wall behind the bust. On the opposite side, there is a photo stand with photos of both the National leader and Ilham Aliyev, the head of the country, related to the University.
There is a 30-person conference hall for holding discussions and events on the 2nd floor. On this floor, there are also 5 VIP apartments with 2-3 rooms designed for professor and teacher staff and built in full compliance with modern requirements.
A large assembly hall for 300 persons with all the necessary conditions for holding events of various levels is on the 3rd floor. The walls and ceiling of the hall are decorated with elegant ornaments in the Eastern style, and the lighting, acoustics, sound and video systems are set according to advanced European standards. Excellent conditions for the relaxation of the participants during the break were created in the lobby in front of the large assembly hall.
The 4th floor is occupied by bedrooms suite only. The cleanliness in the wide and bright corridors is pleasing to the eye. Most of the rooms are tastefully decorated and equipped with all the necessary equipment are designed for 2-3 students and have individual sanitary facilities and shower cabins.
The canteen located on the lower floor can serve 200 teachers and students simultaneously. It is supplied with equipment produced by leading European manufacturers for the storage of foods, cooking, and presentation.
There is a gym, wrestling mats, table tennis, billiards, and other table games in the sports section of the Centre. A library with a hundred pieces of literature on various topics and an electronic library equipped with a Wi-Fi system was also created here. In addition, laboratories in various scientific directions, and educational auditoriums equipped with modern equipment have been created in the Training and Recreation Centre.
