Shahin Mahammad oghlu Panahov – Candidate of Geographical Sciences, Associate Professor

  • Born on January 12, 1955, in the village of Garakhanli, Tovuz District.
  • From 1978-1979, he worked as a researcher at the Geography Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Moscow), under the scientific supervision of Professors V.A. Preobrajenski and A.D. Armand.
  • From 1977-1980, he worked at the Geography Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR.
  • From 1982-1983, he was a junior scientific researcher at the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University (MSU).
  • In 1988, 1989, and 2017, he acted as an opponent for three candidate dissertations prepared at the Geography Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, and in 2013, he was an opponent for a doctoral dissertation defended at the Bauhaus University Weimar (Germany).
  • From 1984-1991, he worked at the N.Tusi Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, Faculty of Geography, as a teacher, associate professor, and deputy dean.
  • From 1995-1999, he was the head of the Department of Geography and Environment at "Khazar" University and the dean of the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences (1991-1995).
  • In 2017, he became the dean of the Faculty of History and Geography (TCF) at ASPU, a member of the ASPU Scientific Council, and the chair of the TCF Scientific Council.
  • From 1970-1973, he studied at Baku State University (formerly S.M. Kirov Azerbaijan State University), Faculty of Geology and Geography, and was sent to Moscow State University by the order of V. Yelyutin, the former Minister of Higher and Secondary Education of the USSR, due to his outstanding achievements in education.
  • From 1973-1977, he studied at Moscow State University, Faculty of Geography.
  • From 1981-1984, he studied in the postgraduate program at Moscow State University (MSU), Faculty of Geography, under the supervision of Professors N.A. Gvozdetsky and A.D. Armand.
  • From 1987-1989, he attended two-year English language courses at the Azerbaijan State Institute of Foreign Languages (Baku), receiving a Certificate of Distinction.
  • From 2004-2006, he completed the Virtual Development Academy of the UN at a professional level, receiving a diploma of distinction.
  • In 2007, he was the deputy head of the Department of Sustainable Development and Regional Policy at the Ministry of Economic Development.
  • From 2007-2015, he was a manager at the Real Estate Registration Project.
  • From 2015-2017, he served as the Chief Adviser to the Management of the State Committee for Property Issues of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
  • From 1999-2007, he was the senior consultant/education manager for sustainable development and the coordination of UN agencies at the UNDP.
  • Since 2019, he has served as the Vice-Rector for International Relations at Baku State University.

Awards and Honors:

  • Fulbright Scholar (USA), 1995 (University of Texas), 2019 (Princeton University).
  • Recognized for his contributions to organizing and hosting the International Geography Conference held in Azerbaijan by the International Geographical Union. He was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation and a cash prize by Academician Hasan Aliyev, Director of the Geography Institute of the Azerbaijan SSR Academy of Sciences, on June 12, 1978.
