“Scientist of the Year” Competition

On March 27, a competition for the title of “Scientist of the Year” will be held among the employees of Baku State University (BSU) in honor of the Day of Science in Azerbaijan.

At Baku State University (BSU), a competition for the title of "Scientist of the Year" will be regularly held among BSU employees on March 27, dedicated to the Day of Science in the Republic of Azerbaijan. The purpose of the competition is to award employees who have demonstrated active scientific activity throughout the year, achieved high scientific results, published scientific articles and other research works in well-known journals and publications indexed in reputable databases with impact factors, and demonstrated high scientific-organizational activity, as well as having their work cited in scientific literature. 
Recognition of Competition Winners:
Winners of the competition will receive the title of “Scientist of the Year” along with diplomas and cash awards in the following categories:
1st Place:
•    In the field of natural and exact sciences – 1 recipient (2,500 manats);
•    In the field of humanitarian and social sciences – 1 recipient (2,500 manats).
2nd Place:
•    In the field of natural and exact sciences – 1 recipient (1,500 manats);
•    In the field of humanitarian and social sciences – 1 recipient (1,500 manats).
3rd Place:
•    In the field of natural and exact sciences – 1 recipient (1,000 manats);
•    In the field of humanitarian and social sciences – 1 recipient (1,000 manats).
Criteria for Evaluating Submitted Documents for the Competition:
Documents submitted for consideration will be assessed based on the following criteria:
1.    A minimum of 5 scientific articles must have been published in 2021, including:
•    At least 3 articles in the field of natural and exact sciences indexed in Web of Science;
•    At least 1 article in the field of humanitarian and social sciences indexed in Web of Science or Scopus, as well as 1 article published in journals included in international abstracting and indexing systems (databases) such as ERIH PLUS, Philosopher's Index, Copernicus, Ulakbim, PsycINFO, or EconLit (the original and/or a copy should be submitted in PDF format with DOI and internet link);
•    Evaluation criteria for articles (MQ) published in journals listed in international abstracting and indexing systems (databases):
MQ = X points/number of authors
• For journals included in the Web of Science database:
• For Q1 quartile journals – X = 60 points;
• For Q2 quartile journals – X = 50 points;
• For Q3 quartile journals – X = 40 points;
• For Q4 quartile journals – X = 30 points;
• For journals without a category – X = 20 points;
• For journals included in the SCOPUS database – X = 40 points;
• For journals included in the ERIH PLUS, Philosopher's Index, Copernicus, Ulakbim, PsycINFO, or EconLit databases – X = 20 points.
o For other journals: regardless of the number of articles – a total of 20 points;

2.    Monographs, atlases, and summaries published in 2021 (original and/or copy in PDF format):
• Evaluation of monographs, atlases, and reviews published by prestigious international publishers (BQ) such as Springer, Wiley, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, American Institute of Physics, Taylor & Francis Ltd, Academic Press, IOP Publishing Ltd, International Thomson Publishing, IntechOpen, etc.:
BQ = 100 points/number of authors
• Evaluation of monographs, atlases, and reviews published in Azerbaijan  (AQ) and having an ISBN:
AQ = 50 points/number of authors
3.    Inventions and patents received in 2021 (copy):
• Evaluation of international inventions and patents (BPQ):
BPQ = 100 points/number of authors
• Evaluation of inventions and patents at the country and Eurasian level (ÖPQ):
ÖPQ = 50 points/number of authors

4.    References to scientific works made in 2021 (excluding self-citations by the authors), statistics on H-index, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Google Scholar (with links provided):
• Evaluation of citations (İ):
İ = X points/number of authors

For Web of Science – X = 20 points;
For SCOPUS – X = 15 points;
For Google Scholar – X = 5 points.
Note:
- The İ point (citations evaluation) for participants in the competition in the field of natural and exact sciences are calculated based on Web of Science;
- The İ point (citation evaluation) for participants in the competition in the field of humanitarian and social sciences are calculated based on Web of Science, SCOPUS, or Google Scholar.

5.    Works under republican, regional, and international grants (completed in 2021, specifying details):
• Evaluation rules for international grants (BQQ):
BQQ = 100 points/number of authors
• Evaluation rules for republican and regional grants (RQQ):
RQQ = 50 points/number of authors

Submission of documents for the competition:
1. Participants must submit legal documents and other supporting materials related to their participation in the competition to the Center for the Organization of Scientific Activities and Innovations (electronically to [email protected]).
2. Only individual employees of BSU can participate in the competition.
3. If the scientific work (article, etc.) and other items (invention, patent) submitted for the competition were carried out by a group of authors, the applicant submitting the scientific work to the competition is responsible for fully informing co-authors who are citizens of Azerbaijan and foreign co-authors about the competition's conditions and their participation in this competition.
4. An applicant awarded within the framework of this competition cannot participate in other similar competitions announced by BSU in the current year.

Young Scientist of the Year
Competition for the "Young Scientist of the Year" nomination, dedicated to 2 February Azerbaijan Youth Day
2. The goal of the "Young Scientist of the Year" award competition, held regularly and dedicated to 2 February Azerbaijan Youth Day, is to reward master’s students, doctoral students, and employees of Baku State University (BSU) under the age of 35 who have actively engaged in scientific activities throughout the year, achieved high scientific results, published scientific articles and other research works in prestigious journals and publications indexed in well-known databases with impact factors, have been cited in scientific works, and demonstrated high scientific-organizational activity.

Awarding the competition winners:
The winners of the competition receive the title "Young Scientist of the Year," are awarded a BSU badge, diploma, and a cash prize in the following nominations:
• In the field of natural and technical sciences – 1 award (2,000 manats);
• In the field of humanitarian and social sciences – 1 award (2,000 manats).

Criteria for evaluating documents submitted for the competition:
Documents submitted for the competition will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

1. The total number of scientific articles published in the current year must be at least 3, including:
- in the field of natural and technical sciences, at least 1 article must be published in journals included in the Web of Science or Scopus databases;
- in the field of humanitarian and social sciences, at least 1 article must be published in journals included in the Web of Science, Scopus, ERIH PLUS, Philosopher's Index, Copernicus, Ulakbim, PsycINFO, EconLit, and other prestigious international abstracting and indexing systems (databases) (the original and/or a copy should be submitted in PDF format, indicating the DOI and internet link).
1.1. Evaluation of articles published in journals included in international abstracting and indexing systems (databases):
• In journals listed in the Web of Science database:

For Q1 quartile journals – number of articles × 50 points;
For Q2 quartile journals – number of articles × 40 points;
For Q3 quartile journals – number of articles × 30 points;
For Q4 quartile journals – number of articles × 20 points;
• For journals indexed in Scopus, ERIH PLUS, Philosopher's Index, Copernicus, Ulakbim, PsycINFO, or EconLit – number of articles × 20 points;
1.2. For other journals – a total of 20 points, regardless of the number of articles;
-Monographs, books, atlases, and reviews published in the current year (original and/or copy in PDF format) – number × 30 points;
-Inventions and patents obtained in the current year (copy) – number × 20 points;
-Citations to scientific works in the current year (excluding self-citations) – number × 10 points (H-index statistics, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Google Scholar with links provided);
-Multidisciplinary and applied research works (with specific justification) – number × 10 points;
-Participation in national and international conferences, symposiums, and other events (including online) (with the event name and link provided, attaching copies of relevant parts of the event program and abstracts) – number × 5 points;
-Work on internal and external grants (in the current year, with specific details) – number × 25 points;
-Teaching activities (in the current year, with specific details) – 20 points;
-Activities in science popularization, such as scientific presentations at meetings, public meetings (including online), appearances on TV, radio, internet TV, interviews, and articles in the media (with copies provided; for extensive materials, an internet link must be provided) – number × 5 points;
-Maintaining personal professional pages on the internet, such as ResearchGate, Mendeley, Academia, LinkedIn, and others (with links provided) – number × 5 points.

Submission of documents for the competition:

1. Participants must submit legal documents and additional supporting materials for the competition (as specified in the "Competition Criteria" section, in electronic form) to [email protected].
2. Only individual master’s students, doctoral students, and staff of Baku State University (BSU) are eligible to participate.
3. The competition does not allow for group awards; each publication (article, etc.) must be submitted by a single participant and must be accompanied by a written agreement with any co-authors, which should be included in the submission documents.
4. If the scientific work (article, etc.) or other submissions (invention, patent) are created by a group of authors, the applicant submitting the work is responsible for fully informing both Azerbaijani and foreign co-authors about the competition conditions and their participation.
5. Works that have received awards in other relevant internal or regional/international competitions are not eligible for submission.
6. Works awarded in this competition cannot be submitted to other competitions announced by BSU in the same year.
